In celebration of American Mother's Day, this Montage Monday features travel with my own mom! Thanks for everything, Mom! I love you!
The last time I saw my mother, we were traveling in Burma in January 2010 with my two aunts (my mother's two younger sisters) and my maternal grandmother to visit our family who still live in Burma. It was a fantastic month-long journey and I had a great time spending quality time with my family, especially my mother.
I flew my mom out to Istanbul to visit me when I was living in Turkey back in 2009. It was her first exposure to a completely different culture and she did well in embracing it. There were a few trying moments during the two weeks we traveled around Turkey, but all in all, I had fun showing my mom around Istanbul and Turkey. Here, my mom and I are walking across Istanbul's Galata Bridge, with the New Mosque (Yeni Camii) in the background.
My first major travel with my mom was to Burma in 2005. If you can believe it, this was also my first international trip as well! To be very honest, I didn't want to go to Burma and my mother basically forced me to go to Burma to visit family. I'm not sure why I didn't want to go to Burma since I was very much interested in traveling. I suppose it was because I wasn't sure what to expect in Burma and the uncertainty scared me. In any case, I'm glad that my mother made me go.
Just another reason for loving my mother all the more: She forced me to get over my fear of traveling to an unknown foreign country!
Where's the BEST place YOU'VE ever traveled to with YOUR mom?

Awww, such a sweet post! I've never travelled with my mother, her health doesn't really allow it. But I can imagine it'd be a ridiculous experience!
ReplyDeleteAwww, this was so cute. My mom came to visit me when I was living in London -- the first time I ever went abroad -- and while I was living in Japan. It was stressful (for both of us -- she doesn't travel much and I tend to stress out a lot when traveling with other people -- hence the reason why most of my trips are solo). But I was so happy to be able to share my life in these countries with her. I think coming to Japan, especially, made her realize why I live abroad so much.
ReplyDeleteaww love it connie! and mom knows best, right? :) i'm hoping i can travel to italy with my mom next year (she won't meet me in the tougher travel places!) must be so wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThe best place I traveled with my mum was Lisbon. Pretty. Thanks for your story
ReplyDeleteAww, very sweet story.
ReplyDeleteAww what a sweet wonderful post, and glad your mother enjoy visiting a new country and embrace it. Like mother like daughter :)
ReplyDeleteI never traveled with my mother, but when I lived in the US for a number of years she would visit every year (from my native Holland)and stay for several weeks. Showing her life in America was always a treat. She loved going to the 'yard sales' on Saturday mornings and pick up typical American odds and ends to take back to Holland.
ReplyDelete@Candice It can really be ridiculous traveling with your mom, or any family member for that matter! It's not always easy, but you do get some amazing times!
ReplyDelete@Sally I'm in complete agreement about it being stressful! =) I think my mom seeing me functioning so well abroad really helped her to understand that she doesn't have to worry so much about me traveling, even if I do it on my own.
@lorna - the roamantics Italy would be a great destination to travel with your mom to! Think of all the food you'll get to eat and all the sites you'd see! I hope it happens for you two as well.
@casinoviembre I remember Lisbon being a lovely city! Glad to hear that you were able to share it with your mum!
@Roy | cruisesurfingz Thank you so much!
@Sarah Wu Haha, you know, the older I get, the more I see similarities I see between myself and my mom. It's not always so pretty but I'm glad that in this case, we're both interested in visiting and embracing new cultures.
@Miss Footloose | Life in the Expat Lane I know how you feel! I really enjoyed showing my mom around Istanbul, to all my favorite places and treat her to my favorite Turkish dishes. I'd like to see what knick knacks your mom has picked up over the years from American yard sales. =)
